What Manufacturing Can Learn From Starbucks
Mary Kaye Denning is the Founder and President of Cleveland-based The Manufacturing Mart, a program that helps connect manufacturers and suppliers by establishing a "permanent tradeshow." We sat down with Denning recently to discuss her theory on bringing a Starbucks "philosophy" to the shop floor by creating a better work environment and empowering employees.
M.net: Can you explain what the Manufacturing Mart hopes to accomplish?
Denning: The concept is a permanent industrial tradeshow, and we would like to appeal to the buyers of industrial and manufacturing services -- and engineering services alike -- to think of downtown Cleveland as a one-stop-shop. The area between Cleveland and Pittsburgh has almost all the phases and processes of manufacturing available. It's a new way of thinking about how to manufacture an article.

Rust Belt Manufacturing & Starbucks:
What They Must Have in Common
Manufacturing employers must take the "Starbucks approach" to recruiting top talent and thus achieving success. Starbucks, one of the largest American manufacturers, has created a culture, a workplace that delivers satisfaction to the customer and employee alike.
Because of this culture, employees would rather be at Starbuck's, working, than staying at home.

Build on Strength: Cleveland’s Manufacturing Mart
In some ways, the semiconductor that sits in a display case at a new showroom in Cleveland’s Galleria is a more fitting emblem for this region than the foreign-made clothing that occupied this space when it was a high-end shopping mall.
Despite all the ink spilled over manufacturing job loss, Ohio’s economy is still dominated by the production of products. The manufacturing process is more streamlined, more technological, but items like the ones in this case, not the foreign-made clothing that it replaced, are still the bedrock of Northeast Ohio’s economy.

New Manufacturing Mart Aims to Re-Ignite Manufacturing Heritage in Ohio
Spurring innovation in manufacturing is the foundation for the The Manufacturing Mart, which officially opens in Cleveland Ohio on Dec. 1. It will provide a showcase for marketing industrial companies and products.
"With the global economy and U.S. manufacturing showing signs of recovery, the timing is right for Cleveland to host a new kind of economic development venue. This region's industrial economy was built with ideas commercialized and manufactured here. We launched the Capital of Know-How to provide a platform for re-igniting this spirit of enterprise and innovation that is part of our manufacturing heritage," explains Mary Kaye Denning, President of Capital of Know-How.

L.A.: City of angels; Cleveland: City of marts
Cleveland eventually is going to have a medical mart (or so we've been told), so why not a manufacturing mart as well?
Two women who long have advocated for innovation in manufacturing in Northeast Ohio think it can, and on Dec. 1 they plan to open The Manufacturing Mart at the Galleria at Erieview.
